The Alvar Aalto Birch Stool 60 is a classic Scandinavian design from 1933. Noted for its ability to easily stack in a spiral for both the 3 and 4 leg variants, it has inspired many replicas including the Ikea frosta.
Aalto developed the L-shape wood bend using solid birch while creating the Stool 60. He went on to patent the technique, and the bent wood aesthetic would become a signature of Aalto’s furniture, as can be seen in his other works such as the Paimio chair or his Chair 66.
This original design is still manufactured in Finland by Artek.
