Finn Juhl’s pelican chair was not well received in his home country of Denmark when it debuted in 1940.
Its sculptural bird shape was considered too radical and each chair had to be handstitched at a time when mass production was king.
It wasn’t until his designs reached America that Juhl became a household name, introducing Danish Modern furniture to the USA.
The Pelican chair is one of Juhl’s best known pieces, and Juhl himself is now regarded as one of the 20th century greats whilst some of his more conservative contemporaries have faded from history.
The chair is still crafted with traditional methods by One Collection.
