The Flock of Butterflies clock or model 2226 is one of more than 150 clocks designed by George Nelson and associates between 1949 and 1980. All their clock designs were manufactured through the Howard Miller Clock Company.
Whilst this clock’s design is attributed to George Nelson himself (as was company policy), the true designer behind it was likely Irving Harper, Don Chadwick or John Pile all of whom worked for Nelson during that period. The wood and aluminium Flock of Butterflies clock uses geometric shapes and angles to create interesting shadows and reflections.
How much attention this clock may garner is very much dependent on the lighting within its surroundings.
The Flock of Butterflies was originally released in 1955 but would be discontinued when Howard Miller folded. Vitra Furniture reintroduced the model. 2226 clock in 2010.
