Hans J Wegner created the China chair in 1944, after being inspired by the forms of the “horse shoe” backed chairs from 17th and 18th century China.
Wegner combined the organic horseshoe shape of the back with Scandinavian aesthetics to create an elegant and functional chair, which was primarily used in personal homes and conference halls upon its release.
The chair’s form was the base design for his iconic Wishbone Chair, designed in 1949. Wegner had a passion for chairs, and created more than 500 over the course of his career.
He trained as a cabinet maker before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he later lectured. The China chair is the only wooden chair available in the Fritz Hansen collection.
