When people think designer lights, its not uncommon to sub-consciously conjure images of Poul Henningsen’s iconic designs. Henningsen developed the PH5 in 1958. This classic pendant light was an almost frustrated response to the ever changing standards (or lack there of) for bulb sizes in the 50s.
Poul would say “I have accepted fate, and with Louis Poulsen´s permission I have designed a PH fixture which can be used with any kind of light source, Christmas lights and 100 W metal-filament bulbs. Although a fluorescent tube would be too much to ask in the existing form!” Of course the Fluorescent bulbs have since come and even been surpassed by LED bulbs as we move towards more sustainable lighting.
The PH50 light was a reworking of the original PH5 in a variety of colours and finishes released in 2008 on the light’s 50th anniversary. Available from Louis Poulsen.
