Shiro Kuramata’s elegant designs gained international recognition in the 1970’s, making him a thoughtleader of 20th century design. Until that point, japan had been seen as a country of manufacturers rather than designers.
The Glass Shelves No.1 were created in 1976. Made of 12mm thick transparent glass, the shelves are thermowelded together into a single unit by the master glass artisans at the Glas Italia workshop in Italy.
