Shiro Kurumata‘s most famous chair designs were truly ground breaking. There exists nothing like his wire mesh “How high the moon” chair… and his “Miss Blanche” Chair which sold for over 80,000 GBP on auction at Christies. They are in fact so unique that it’s difficult to see a mainstream market for them.
However during the 70s and 80s, Kurumata did produce some very stylish pieces with definite mass market appeal. The Sofa with Arms came out in 1982 but appears to be from another era. It’s simple minimalist and beautiful lines look more at home at the Bauhaus than amidst 80s post-modern styling. Fans of the modern classics, will be wondering how they missed such a beauty.
Italian company Cappellini still produce this sofa today in a variety of colours and seat configurations.
