Stefano Giovannoni (born 1954, in La Spezia)
Stefano Giovannoni is famous for his work with Italian group – Alessi. He has been refered to as the “most popular designer of the 2000s” and “the most bankable designer, today”. All these titles are well deserved, and he continues to create marvellous work from his Milan studio today.
Giovannoni attained his architecture qualifications in Florence in 1978. He would go on to teach there until until 1991. During that period he also worked with Ettore Sottsass and Mendini-Alchemy and was a founding member of the Bolidismo Movement. He then went on to work as an industial designer in the 90’s creating a number of commercially successful pieces. By the turn of the century, his work for Alessi in particular had him amongst the most commercially successful designers in the world.
Stefano places a great deal of importance to his time at the University of Florence. “That was where the concept of ‘radical architecture’ was born, which created a whole new language and way of expression in Italian design,” he says. It was a movement that cleared the slate and renewed purpose for the designers of tomorrow.
